Art from Your Soul

What kind of ART are you inspired by in your day to day life?

There are so many different things that can inspire creativity in us. Stream & RocksFrom a mood, to nature, to religion, to relationships, we can be inspired by something grand or something that may seem small and insignificant to someone else. When you think of things in nature that inspire you, what do you think of? For me it might be the sun's rays descending from behind a cloud, the beauty of a moth's wing, or even the beautiful little cornflower blue "weeds" that poke their heads up in my yard in the spring. These make me want to write or draw or at the very least pick the flowers and arrange them in a tiny vase in my kitchen so that I can enjoy their beauty. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines inspiration as "a: a divine influence or action on a person believed to qualify him or her to receive and communicate sacred revelation; b: the action or power of moving the intellect or emotions; c: the act of influencing or suggesting opinions." Once our emotions are moved, we are then influenced to take some sort of action. If we are moved in a negative way we will likely act in a negative way; conversely, if we are moved in a positive way there are all kinds of positive actions we might consider.

Double RainbowWhen you see a rainbow, what kinds of emotions do you experience? When you see someone commit an act of hatred, what do you feel? These feelings can be turned into beauty if we allow our emotions the outlet of creativity when so inspired. What is it for you? Do you ever want to pick up the knitting needles and begin to create something warm and fuzzy? Is it because you feel a duty to do it? I imagine it's because you are inspired by the thought of making something wonderful with your hands, or the thought that you are doing something for someone you love. Maybe you love the feel of the thread between your fingers or the color and texture of the yarn.

What about those of you who love to garden... do you do it because you feel a duty to work the land? I suspect it is more because you love Azalea With Monarchthe feel of the dirt between your fingers or because you love the beauty that all that work leads to. Maybe you love the smell of the dirt as you prepare it for planting.

Others of you find your fingers reaching for a craft box inspired by the thought of making some beautiful piece of jewelry. For some the thoughts and scents of culinary treats beckon you to concoct some new recipe. Maybe you find yourself thinking of a delicious plot and can't wait to take pen in hand to record it. Is it clay that beckons you to knead it and shape it into some terrific shape?

Whatever the medium, that rush of creativity that comes from being inspired is something that can hardly be described, much less bottled and sold. Whatever the outcome, the inspiration is original and unique to each individual. So, take time to find what inspires you, then let it spur you on toward action, and then see your inspiration become something tangible!
